Predeterminations help enrollees understand payment responsibilities

Delta Dental's free service helps enrollees, dentists

When clients ask for ways to minimize out-of pocket expenses for dental care, you can tell them about Delta Dental's free predetermination of benefits service.

Predeterminations also help enrollees and their dentists make more informed decisions about dental care.

A predetermination is particularly useful for more costly procedures such as crowns, wisdom tooth extractions, bridges, dentures or periodontal surgery. When a dentist predetermines treatment with Delta Dental, an estimate of their share of the cost and how much Delta Dental will pay is provided to the dentist before treatment begins.

Enrollees should consider obtaining predeterminations:

  • If they are having extensive work done
  • To ensure a procedure is covered
  • To see if they will exceed their annual maximum
  • If they need to establish a payment plan in advance

All enrollees need to do to take advantage of this service is to ask their dentist for a predetermination at least three weeks before they schedule any prescribed, major treatment. (If the enrollee hasn't previously satisfied his or her deductible, it will be considered in the predetermination calculation.)

See our article for enrollees for more details on predeterminations.
