August 28, 2008
San Francisco, CA — Sixty-five outstanding dental school students received nearly a quarter of a million dollars in grants this year from Delta Dental of California, Delta Dental of Pennsylvania and affiliated companies, officials announced today. The 2008 Student Leadership Awards, presented to students at 20 dental schools in 12 states and the District of Columbia, recognize graduating dental students who demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities. Delta Dental established the awards in 1977 in honor of Dr. F. Gene Dixon, the first chief executive officer of Delta Dental of California, which is now part of the largest dental benefits delivery system in the country along with affiliates Delta Dental of Pennsylvania and Delta Dental Insurance Company.
"The students selected for this award represent the future of dentistry, and we are proud to support their efforts and accomplishments," said Marilynn D. Belek, executive vice president and chief dental officer for the group of companies.
Delta Dental of California, Delta Dental of Pennsylvania, Delta Dental Insurance Company and affiliated companies are part of a San Francisco-based holding company system collectively serving nearly 23 million enrollees in both commercial and government-sponsored programs throughout the nation. Nationwide, there are an estimated 170 million people with dental benefits.
