Delta Dental Puts Money Where Kids' Mouths Are

Mobile dental clinics, educational tools and interactive cavity risk quiz highlight company’s participation in national Children’s Dental Health Month

February 16, 2010

San Francisco — When it comes to oral health, it’s never too early to start. That’s why a group of Delta Dental companies today launched several new tools to educate kids on how to take care of their smiles.

As part of Children’s Dental Health Month this February, Delta Dental of California, Delta Dental of New York and several other Delta Dental companies under common management will emphasize the importance of starting good oral health habits early. Parents can help by scheduling regular dental appointments for their children, but encouraging kids to take care of their own teeth is important, too.

"We're making dental education more accessible as well as more fun by providing new tools to children, such as our online cavity risk quiz and new games to help them learn more," said Daniel Croley, DMD, Delta Dental vice president. "Dental caries is the most chronic childhood disease in the country, and we need to get more kids to participate in their own preventive care."

The children's dental cavity risk quiz, accessible on Delta Dental's children's web site at www.mysmilekids.com, is just one of the many free educational resources Delta Dental provides to children, parents and teachers. The company also offers schools a chance during Children's Dental Health Month to receive a visit from a dental health education specialist and sponsored several mobile clinics on "Give Kids a Smile® Day" on February 5.

"Just about every child is at some risk for cavities, which is why we are raising awareness about cavity prevention and providing financial support for some of these children’s mobile dental clinics," Croley added.

Delta Dental of California, Delta Dental of New York and several other companies under common management provide dental benefits to more than 24 million people in 15 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. All part of the Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA), based in Oak Brook, Ill., and which consists of 39 Delta Dental member companies licensed in all 50 states. The association collectively covers nearly 54 million of the 174 million people nationwide with private dental insurance, making it by far the largest national system of dental plans.
